best of 2006

why wait till the end of the year, when i already know what my favourites are before they’re even out.

music
yeah yeah yeahs - show your bones

  • first single: gold lion (download mp3 | video)

the raconteurs (jack white + greenhornes) - broken boy soldiers

  • first single: steady as she goes (download mp3)

the streets - The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living

  • first single: when you wasn’t famous (downlad mp3 | video)

movies
darren aronofsky’s “the fountain” - trailer
the wachowski brother’s “v for vendetta” - trailer
terry zwigoff/daniel clowes’ “art school confidential” (aka ghost world 2) - trailer
philip k dick/richard linklater’s “a scanner darkly” (aka sci-fi waking life) - trailer

im such a presold property.

ps i actually havent even watched that ‘v for vendetta’ trailer, cause im being all ’spoiler!’ nerd about it. you’d have to ask ian or jeff about my wachowski bros/matrix obsession. and my ma is helping feed my addiction, she got me the 10 dvd package for christmas, which came with this handsome devil who now rests upon my speaker:

i challenge you to come up with a bigger nerd move than that!

its on like donkey kong, literally

this is what became of my keg party. jokers like these guys rolling the empty keg down the stairs whilst another joker jumps over it. the keg went a little rogue occassionally, and i saw a few “participants” limping later on. a railing and a stair were the only real casualities, and i consider myself lucky for packing 30-40 people into our tiny place with no more damage than that, bacon’s dignity aside, of course.

thank you for the party lord.

where the reader turns against the author

you might hate me post-reading this… uhh… post. im having a pretty lucky week, and the vastness of my good ‘fortune’ might be hatred-producing. just a warning.

so the campus jesus kids (they prefer the title “campus for christ”) we’re running this RIDICULOUS event in which they were giving away 2500 dollars (for the astute reader, you can probably guess where this is going). all week they were advertising all over campus, “what do 2500 dollars and god have in common?” and “is anything free?” if youre actually interested/outraged by their “ploy” to bribe people to their speaker, you can check out isanythingfree.com for their justification. ironically, i made this post on their discussion board mere hours before the event. so i went because i thought it would be funny to witness the “exodus” (har har) of people that left after the draw, since they were doing the draw first and allowing people to leave without hearing their hurray-for-jesus speaker. AND because i wanted to win all that jesus money, of course. so why am i telling this story? well i won the 2500 clams. they read my number and i leaned over to my friend laura in disbelief: “i think i just won.” she freaked out. i started to shake a little. then i proceeded down the aisle to get my giant novelty cheque.

the next day, high on my winnings, i stroll into work, tell the crew about my unbelievable good luck, make fun of the jesus kids, check my email. apparently 2500 is just the beginning, as i find out im on the a-list for the sshrc scholarship (this big government scholarship for grad school), and since everyone on the a-list has gotten the scholarship in the past, im almost guaranteed full funding for wherever i do grad school next year. at this point, im a little light-headed. i also consider buying a helmet, because this much good cant happen to someone without something bad happening as well.

so people are asking me how im gonna spend the money. i got some good advice of “do something good for you, do something good for someone else, and do something bad for yourself.” so the good for me, besides saving for grad school, is maybe a digital camera (ive been “borrowing” my moms for years), the good for someone else is a chunk of it to charity, and the bad for me is a night of booze and blasphemy this saturday, with all my nearest and dearest invited for free booze. if you read my blog, you’re invited, so email me for details. the more the merrier.

apparently luck strikes in threes, and while my lotto 649 or whatever lottery ticket it was i bought because everyone was telling me to didnt hit (god the lottery is stupid), i did happen to win a nice little prize package of dvds at the mit movie trivia night, with help from my fellow ‘peter panopticon’ teammate romy. a giant douchebag won the grand prize dvd player, but my mommy just bought me one of those recently, so the dvds were just dandy.

oh shit i gotta go, i have a doctor’s appointment to get an xray of my colon. apparently there’s some sort of lucky horseshoe wedged up there…

re:cap

remember?

while it appears that some/most of my mit crew have lost their blogamania! feeling for the moment, at least others have picked up in their absence, giving me plenty of blog to read instead of posting in my own. ains is in africa. tab is in honduras. ian is going to france. mark is back. jill is… doing something.

anywhoodle, apparently i havent posted pics in quite some time, so here goes the ol random photo recap.

christmas brought with it a new christmas tradition: jagnog. the egg nog and the jag dont really get along–in the glass OR in your stomach–but anything to increase my consumption of eggnog over the holidays. only 11 more months till more!

on new years, me and my “mostly dutch” family stayed in a very wholesome “cottage”, not doing much else but eating delicious food and drinking delicious booze.

i made a family crest for the fam…

…and i got a badass walkman in the yankee swap gift exchange. my denim jacket is happy to be back together with his old friend, they grew up together.

next big event, charity ball. my chance to get really drunk with two of my gorgeous roomates.

and then jeffy and jackie had their respective birthdays. jeffy got the cape and crown treatment…

while jackie’s nite was a group costume, simply consisting of sweats and beaters. which was a riot at the bar.

i believe at this point, me alicia and keira are “jumping on it”

so we have this gigantic poster of johnny cash in our living room.

alicia and keira have apparently taken note.

as has jackie.

our other gigantic poster is snoop and pac, which provides endless entertainment

feel free to leave suggestions for more snoop and pac jokes in the comments…
