fav films of 2007

it’s almost not even worth making this list cause i have yet to see most of the “front-runners” this year… there will be blood, i’m not there, the diving bell and the butterfly, persepolis, sweeney todd, ratatouille, 4 months 3 weeks 2 days, atonement, the savages, southland tales, away from her, etc etc etc. regardless (or irregardless, what a country!), my favs thus far:

no country for old men, duh
the darjeeling limited
knocked up/superbad
juno
michael clayton

honourable mentions:
the simpsons movie
grindhouse
american gangster
lust, caution
eastern promises
ocean’s 13 + transformers, cause i love me some bloated spectacle

look who’s stalking

narcissism bad!
sometimes i feel like the internet, more specifically living thru an avatar on the internet, can be pretty self-indulgent (uhh duh, i run a site that’s my own stupid name!), so i think i’m gonna stop the whatever-i-feel-like-writing posts, and just stick to photo-stories. and though i should have some sort of writing outlet other than all the academic mumbo-jumbo i do in school*, i’m not feeling much like writing these days… especially about myself…

* did i mention i’m writing the book on soderbergh? literally: me and “my colleague” (aka my buddy colin) got a book deal to write the book on steven soderbergh (there’s no book out on soderbergh yet, so it technically is: the book on soderbergh). anywho, so that’s happening. in 2010.

and yeah, maybe facebook killed the blogstar. in the very least, i spend enough time on the book of faces, i don’t need a blog to eat my time as well…

narcissism good!
in slightly less self-indulgent, slightly more sharing-is-good! news, i’m linking to all the social networking/sharing sites that i use, so you can stalk me share your favourite links, photos, videos, and music with me. seriously, use these websites if you don’t already, and then add me as a contact. share baby!

favs of 2006 - music videos

easy choice for #1:
Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy
this might actually be my favourite piece of “media” all year, perfect synthesis of music and stock footage of project excelsior, plus some majestic surfing video thrown in for good measure. i have a pet thesis that curiousity and inspiration are far important emotions than love, this might be exhibit a. the world is just so goddam big. i have a 100 MB high quality version of this, if you want it, msg/email/comment/facebook/whatever me and i’ll get it to ya.

and the rest:
Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks
tee he

Xiu Xiu - Boy Soprano
another case off “duuuh why didnt anyone think of this before” (other than the chili peppers 3d video game lame-a-thon)

I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness: The Owl
speaking of inspiration, this was made by just one dude, some computer animation nerd here in canada. an eerie sin city vibe, me likey. (high quality version)

the thermals - pillar of salt
what i hope to do with our storage room (high quality version)

The Raconteurs - steady as she goes

jack white and jim jarmusch cant fail

the raconteurs - steady as she goes
jack white and pee wee herman cant fail

favs of 2006 - movies

v for vendetta - James McTeigue
my matrix obsession is no secret, maybe my emerging graphic novel one is, and political blockbusters are one of my research interests. enter v for vendetta.

trailer park boys - Mike Clattenburg
a canadian movie! in theatres! and its really funny!

stranger than fiction - marc foster
meta and will ferrell, together at last

the fountain - darren aranofsky
marie antoinette - sofia coppola
expectations can be a bitch.

the good german - steven soderbergh
soderbergh and clooney, another research interest, havent even seen it yet but i feel confident enough to put in on my list. soderbergh is so hit and miss but i love his misses too, so it cant disappoint!

talledega nights: the ballad of ricky bobby - Adam McKay
watch after the credits, moral ambiguity indeed.

the departed - martin scorcese
i cant think of what to say except that i really want to see this again, i guess that’s enough.

a scanner darkly - richard linklater
a trip on so many levels.

didnt get to see but may very well fill that tenth spot: brick, half nelson, science of sleep.

and a nod to An Inconvenient Truth, not that i’d ever wanna watch it again, but you gotta appreciate such an important message that reached such a large audience. super-serial guys.
